Job ads down, applications sky high

by Brett Iredale January 30, 2009

I am just looking at January's stats in JobAdder and it makes for interesting reading.

Most notably this:

- Job ad numbers are down 26% compared to November 08.

- Total job applications are up 11% compared to Nov 08.

Get those ads up folks - the fish are biting.

Hey Brett, Quick question - I know you've added a good number of new customers since this time last year. Are you stripping out the new customers' ads and applications ie are we talking apples for apples?

Carey

Yes that is not counting new customers added since Nov 1 08, so we are directly comparing Nov 08 to Jan 09.

The other stat that validates this is that the average number of applicants per job is up significantly on all major job boards.

It looks like being a great year for finding new staff.

Agreed, some good calibre candidates out there at excellent rates/salaries.

Brett, an 11% increase in applications is hardly "sky high", especially from what was probably close to an all time low.

Obviously people who have lost their jobs are actively looking but I'm hearing from some recruiters of specialist staff that applications from good candidates have dropped and people are harder to move if they are already employed with a company that isn't obviously in trouble.

I agree with you on job ads though, ours are way down for HR in particular.

Kevin - the TOTAL number of applications were up 11% and TOTAL job ads were down 26%. So to get 11% more applications from 26% LESS job ads is indeed sky high.

Brett, surely if you have 26% LESS jobs, even if you have the same number of job seekers in the market you are likely to get more applications ?

Kevin I must not be explaining this very well because you're still not following.

To use some example numbers if there were 10,000 job ads in November 08 and 150,000 applicants and in January 09 there were 7,500 job ads and a total of 170,000 applicants then that is a very big swing. End of point.
