Job shortage? Apparently not in retail.

by Brett Iredale July 31, 2009

I went for a walk this morning with my daughter and noticed a few positions vacant signs in windows.  Thinking there seemed to be a few more than normal I started taking pics.  In a 10 minute walk up and back in one little strip of shops near home I found no less than 10 now hiring signs.

It is staggering to think that in certain parts of the world and certain industries the job market is falling apart and yet I could have found a job for myself, my wife and probably my 19 month old daughter within a 10 minute walk from home.

I would say your sample is not representative... Businesses in Crows Nest (by the look of it) which is not on the train line and for that matter Chatswood do have difficulty attracting less well paid workers than other suburbs because of the cost of travel and time to travel there. If a person is working particularly as a part timer they are not going to manage to pay the relatively higher rent on the North Shore and be living locally.

Hi Guy

No it is not Crows Nest and there is loads of public transport. There may be some truth in what you are saying but I find it strange that there would be an abundance of retail jobs in this part of Sydney and not elsewhere.
