4 skills every recruiter should know in 2026
There’s been a lot of talk (and fear) about AI replacing recruiters. While we don’t think that’s true, we do believe AI is raising the bar.
Expectations for what recruiters can do have already massively increased and shifted, and they’re set to keep rising as AI continues to become embedded in day-to-day workflows across the industry.
81% of agencies are already using AI and automation (according to our 2025/26 Recruitment Benchmarking Report) and 86% are planning to increase their use in the next year. In other words, if you haven’t already invested in this tech, 2026 is the time to do so.
Why this matters in 2026
JobAdder’s 2025/26 Recruitment Benchmarking Report found that 78% of recruiters feel that client expectations have risen, and 63% say candidate expectations are at an all-time high.
With AI taking on a lot of the heavy lifting and monotonous admin, the human element of recruitment becomes the ultimate differentiator, and one you therefore can’t afford to get wrong in 2026.
In this article, we’ll take a look at the four key skills that recruiters must master to stay competitive in 2026. If you want a more comprehensive dive into these insights and more, be sure to download our 2026 Recruiter’s Guide to AI.
1. Commercial curiosity
AI is great for instantly surfacing insights. Take Adder Intelligence – JobAdder’s suite of AI tools – for example, which can search your database to find gaps in your data and fit recommendations for candidates based on relevancy ratings, amongst other things.
And while it’s great at showing you these things, the thing it’s not designed to do is that human element. AI still needs recruiters to know what to do with those insights, to ask the right questions, and even to challenge AI assumptions (because as you’ve probably heard, AI doesn’t always get it right).
This commercial curiosity and ability to turn AI-driven data and insights into real, tangible outcomes is a crucial skill for recruiters to have in 2026.
2. Advisory selling
Another critical skill to develop (or continue developing) in 2026 is your point of view.
AI can give clients (and recruiters) all the information you could possibly want. What it can’t provide is that essential interpretation of data, or the ability to offer recommendations and influence decisions based on years of experience with what works and what doesn’t.
3. Process discipline
If you’ve got inconsistent, messy workflows, now is the time to sharpen them up. Because unfortunately, this isn’t something AI can fix. All AI will do is amplify your existing processes, whether that’s good or bad.
4. Human connection
This one might seem obvious, but it’s an integral one to keep in mind.
Because although AI can draft content, summarise calls, and pull analytics, the one thing it can’t do? Build trust. Create authentic relationships. Connect with candidates and clients in a meaningful, lasting way.
The recruiters who are going to excel in 2026 and beyond are those who can foster exceptional conversations, handle objections, and form long-lasting relationships.
