Job description vs job ad

While often used interchangeably, a job description and a job ad are not the same thing.

Job description

A job description is an internal document designed to define the parameters of a specific job. Current employees, new hires going through onboarding, and potential job candidates use job descriptions to learn exactly what is expected of them within a job role. A good job description provides more depth about the job requirements and responsibilities of the position than a job ad typically does.

Job ad

A job ad or job post is an external piece of content designed to attract potential candidates to apply for a job. A job ad is typically more succinct than a job description, and should include the job title, and brief job summary, an overview of job responsibilities, company culture, perks, salary range, as well as the education level, work experience, and skillset of an ideal candidate.
